In the 2023 Ballon d'Or, Lionel Messi secured his eighth award, setting a new record. Messi, who played for Inter Miami and the Argentina national team, led his country to victory in the World Cup held in Qatar, ending Argentina's 36-year-long wait for the prestigious title. At 36 years old, Messi's eighth win surpasses the record previously held by any other player.

During the ceremony in Paris, Messi was officially named the winner for his exceptional performance. He led Argentina to their World Cup triumph, contributing significantly by scoring crucial goals in the tournament, including two in the thrilling final against France. His remarkable achievements helped him surpass tough competition from players like Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe, among others.

Aside from his success at the World Cup, Messi's overall outstanding season included a successful stint with PSG, where he played 41 matches, scoring 21 goals and providing 20 assists during the 2022/23 season. His exceptional performance in the World Cup, where he scored in each stage, solidified his claim to the Ballon d'Or.

Upon receiving the award, Messi expressed gratitude towards his national teammates and everyone involved in Argentina's World Cup victory. He also took a moment to acknowledge the late Diego Maradona and celebrate his birthday, an emotional tribute fitting for the occasion. After his contract with PSG ended, Messi made a move to Inter Miami in the MLS, becoming one of the nominees who currently do not play in Europe.

With this eighth Ballon d'Or, Messi continues to cement his legacy in football, having previously won the award in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019, and 2021. Cristiano Ronaldo, his closest competitor with five Ballon d'Or awards, was not nominated for the 2023 edition.

Moreover, the ceremony saw recognition for outstanding players across different categories, with Spain's Aitana Bonmati and Real Madrid’s Bellingham winning the Ballon d'Or Feminin and the Best Young Player award, respectively. The event highlighted the accomplishments of various talents, including nominees from the Premier League such as Harry Kane, Bukayo Saka, and Jude Bellingham.
